PRINCIPAL

Mary Beth Coyne is an architect practicing primarily in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and San Francisco, California.  Her work and passion for the mountains have taken her to wild and remote locations, including Alaska and Wyoming, to practice architecture.  Mary Beth has more than 20 years of experience in the architecture profession and received her professional degree from Cornell University.  In the course of her career, Mary Beth worked as an architect with internationally recognized firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson on award winning projects in Utah, California, Tokyo, and London.  In the pursuit of post-graduate studies, Mary Beth won the Eidlitz Traveling Fellowship from Cornell University to pursue the study of cemeteries and crematoria in Scandinavia.

Mary Beth Coyne Architecture's work seeks engagement with the land and environment, in pursuit of a sensuous modernity.  The haptic environment has been a focus of Mary Beth's study and work throughout her career and education.  In the management of projects, the studio approaches design attuned to the clients' desires, seeking a unique realization in form, light, and material responsive to site and climate.  Budget-driven project management and thoughtful, transparent communication are essential components of the design and construction process.  The studio has extensive experience with design of projects in cold and snowy alpine climates.  The urban aspect of the studio has significant experience with additions and renovations to historic residences in San Francisco, and the intricacies of the Planning and variance processes in the city.  

Mary Beth is passionate about exploring sustainable design and construction practices. She has managed LEED certified and environmentally innovative projects, has studied with Passivehaus international and the Living Building Challenge, and was the Sustainability Coordinator for the US Fish and Wildlife Service Alaska Region. Mary Beth's diverse background includes design and project management of Apple Retail stores, high end residences, and complex projects for the Federal government. The design studio seeks a collaborative approach to the building realization and often partners in a design-build process for construction.

Mary Beth served as a member of the Town of Jackson’s Design Review Committee for over 4 years, and volunteers with numerous community groups. She engages art with her architectural practice and was an artist in residence at Playa Summer Lake in 2022. Mary Beth started designing houses when she was 7, and finds the impetus for her designs then - engagement with the outdoor world and creating spaces to play / enjoy / think - still resonates.  Mary Beth draws inspiration from the mountains, rivers, and land.  When not working in the studio, she is likely outside - fly fishing, snowboarding, biking, or exploring in the mountains.
